Are You Mindful of Your Listening?

August 1, 2022by admin0

So what’s listening? A physical state achieved by focusing awareness on the present moment. Are you mindful of your listening? Do you listen to each word that comes out of your mouth? Do you judge, worry, criticize yourself as you’re speaking? Do you know what a large majority of people have as a major fear?  Public speaking! This fear is fed by the lack of focusing awareness on the present moment. Several years ago, I had the opportunity to spend 17 days with the Dalai Llama. One day during his lecture, he said “the best way to resolve any problem in the human world is for all sides to sit down and listen”.

Here’s homework: take seven minutes per day to practice listening to “each word that’s coming out of your mouth”. Listen to what you’re saying in the present moment. This practice will enable you to become mindful of your listening. Practice this mindful listening for the rest of the year, and remember what Vincent Van Gogh said, “practice makes permanent…”

6. The reason I listen is to get something out of the conversation that applies to me.
7. I usually listen to myself when I’m speaking.
